I think it depends on the girl. If you like her but feel uneasy handholding and hugging, then try some other ways to let her know you like her...smiling right into her eyes, whatever.
Don't do anything you are not comfortable with just because you think a girl might expect it. Too much handholding/hugging might give a girl the wrong impression, too, that a guy actually likes her more than he really does.

I don't expect anyhting on the first date because I am kind of old fashioned, I wont feel comfortable holding hands or kissing a guy unless he is my boyfriend. But, that is just me and it depends on the girl and the kind of affection you are giving too.
