It is all about faith. In this day and age, there is a serious lack of faith in just about anything, never mind something as nebulous as "God". Religion has endured through the strong efforts of the various churches and its followers. When people believe in something, they will follow it through fire and war, it is their anchor.

It's unfortunate that religion as we know it is putting up such a good fight for it's existence. So far as Agnostics go they're here because the ability to question is very important to the progress of humanity. Most if not all religions put a lid on questioning and as a result stifled human growth in many areas of the humanities, sciences, arts, etc. Agnostics burned at the stake for the freedom to question even if it came to "matters of faith". We must respect the ability/freedom to question so that we may avoid times like the Dark Ages (500+ years of human suffering/stagnation). PEACE!

It is easier to believe that there is something outh there. It's easier to think that there is afterlife than to think that when you die you just don't exist any more. And yet religion changes from time to time but just lot slower then other things ( governments, types of currency, types of weapons). We dont bebeive in Greek Gods anymore.
And ther is so many agnostic because people dont want to go easy way any more.

Simply coz we got the progress only few hundred years ago.
Remember before there were no bibles in hands.
Bibles were so expencive that if bible was stoled from church it could easily to put church out of busness. THat's why bibles were in displays with chains.
Pppl did not have a chance to study. They belived what was told.
THere were no scolars, no computers to analysed it.
Pppl who did not belive were killed.
Now its all cahnged. Ppl can see for them self and learn that's why its mroe and more agnostics or non-religious ppl. Soon ( another century may be) and we will be done with religion.
GOD does not need religion. Religion needs GOD.

Lasted so long because there is truth to it, but because the truth is not always what people want to hear they create other religions that are more pleasing to them and which allow them to live their life the way they want without having the consequences to go with them and agnostic somewhat for the same reason, but also because there are so many religions out there it is hard for them to discern which is right so they tend to lean towards all of them having truth, but since at their very core all religions are at odds with eachother there must be only one of them that is right...the key is to figure out which one.
The below link shows why Christianity is different than all other religions that are man created.

Religion will always be until proof has been placed upon us that is undeniable one way or the other. And even then there will be those that distrust and say that the lie is the work of the one true god hiding his truth, or some crap like that. Religion exists because some questions have no answers.

Religion has lasted so long because there is a God and all of our hearts seek after him because we were created to be in a relationship with him. As St. Augustine said "Our hearts are restless until they find their rest in him."

And actually, there aren't that many agnostic.
If you look at the pie chart in the link below, approximately 8% of the world population is agnostic/athiest/non-theistic.

To quote H.P. Lovecraft "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear. And the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown." I believe that fear of the unknown is what keeps religion going. No one really knows what is going to happen, and religion can help to ease that fear. I'm agnostic because I'm unsure if there is a god...guess there are a lot of unsure people out there. It's hard to fully believe in a god, especially in this day and age.

Why? Well, it's simple really: it has been the most effective way of manipulating the masses. Religion is the most powerful and influential form of politics there has ever been. It has been positive in some aspects, from keeping people from killing each other with the fear of eternal damnation, to condemning inbreeding and other various things. But, what better way to motivate your people behind your cause than to say "it is the word of your god"?

It is inherent in human psychology that when we don't understand something, we will make up a reason even if we are conscious of the process of making it up. We don't like loose ends as a species. As long as there is even one thing we don't understand as a race, SOME form of supernatural belief will exist because there will be someone who will refuse to accept that everything follows the basic rules of logic.

Religion has lasted that long because it explains all the things that humans have always wanted to know (like death) and gives people something to believe in and a reason to live and to act a certain way.
