A man asked his doctor, "Doc will I live longer if I quit smoking, drinking and eat a low fat diet"
Doctor said shaking his head "No not really but it will seem longer"

To answer your question, the same reason as people who:
talk on cell phones when they drive
eat when they drive
put on make-up when they drive
eat fatty foods
regulary visit their physician for pain meds
drink alcohol
gamble their life savings
run red lights
have extramarital affairs
buy prostitutes

I stopped smoking 1 month ago cold turkey because I got a head and chest cold. I had wanted to stop a LONG time ago but the f*cking things really are hard to quit.

I had been smoking on and off for 6 years now; meaning I'd smoke for a year here and then stop for 6 months, then I'd pick it back up for a couple months and then quit again. This last time I smoked for about 2 years straight.

My father smoked for 25 years and ironically was a respiratory therapist the whole time too.

I used to smoke weed and I think that's what started it. I liked smoking a cigarette when I was high because when you're 16 and always baked, you're not exactly at your smartest. Plus, there's that retarded myth that you get 11% more high when you smoke a cigarette after smoking weed.

But then I decided to go into nursing and I had to take all these health related pre-requisites. And the two classes that made me REALLY see what I was doing to my body was Nutrition and Anatomy. Cigarettes cause so much irreparable harm on a large scale down to the smallest functions/systems of your body.

But to answer your question, once you start... I'm telling you, they're incredibly addicting. And the reasons why people start vary so there's no ONE definitive answer, in my world. I didn't hate my life, you just don't see or notice the scary side effects such as cancer or aneurysms immediately until you actually get it. And even then, because it's so addicting, not everyone stops... So in that case, I would come to the conclusion that the person doesn't have high regard for their own life. But I'm glad that I stopped and now I can't stand the smell of it; come to think of it, I didn't even like it when I DID smoke and I know that I won't run into cigaretter related health complications later in life.

No Hun, I don't hate my life and as a matter of fact quite the opposite! But when I was a young (about 17) when my best friend was shot in the head by her brother (he was on drugs) and she died and I just thought that if I smoked just once (to calm my nerves) it would be okay, right? WRONG! Cigarettes in this country are made to be highly addictive! I smoked one cigarette that night and have been addictive ever since! Stupid move I know but the cigarettes companies really do advertise to kids and I thought one time big deal? I will be fine and now here I am, I smoke a 1/2 a pack a day! Which I think is good considering I was smoking 1 to 2 packs a day! But it is harder than what people think to just quit. Thanks for giving me a chance to explain!

People smoke because its an addictive substance, more addictive than heroin. I have given up three times, and always gone back to it. My dad died of lung cancer and I still smoke, its one of the worlds worst addictions, but not publicised. Governments make too much money from tax and no one bothers because its legal. If it was banned and people couldnt buy it legally then we wouldn't smoke. It's not cool it doesnt look good, its disgusting and I hate it, but I still smoke.

Why do people over eat or drink too much or take drugs?????? SAme reason they are stress releivers by one self medicating themselves. I mean look every commercial you see on TV has a pill to pop for everything from sleeping pills to viagra............. which all can be harmful to you also. What people have always done in the past before all these "mirracle pills" came out was to SELF MEDICATE!!!!!!!! GET OVER IT! This world can be a very stressful place to live. I"m sure you have your own probs too. So practice what you preach! Amen!

Why do people drink alcohol? Same for why tobacco (and pot) smokers do the same: to take the stressful edge off. People during the infancy of America had a great many stresses to deal with, a consequence of raw survival. Tobacco and drink took the stresses of their lives away for a spell.

But as humans we are, we overexcess our vices to addictions and death....which gives arise to opposing liberals like you.

Alcohol and tobacco are two vices that if done in mature moderation, don't have to hurt anyone.....and still take that 'edge' off when needed.

I was a smoker for 16 years and still remember that I started because it really seemed to be the thing to do for were I grew up. I started young and was always told not to smoke from parents and I did it because it was a way for me to do my own thing. Anyway, as time went on my reasons changed. I no longer smoked because it seemed cool or because I wanted to do my own thing. I smoked as an adult because I was really addicted.

Answer one: People see family doing it, then they think it's okay - and don't think anything if it.
Answer two: Peer presure from friends to smoke gets to the victems head.
Answer three: They don't care or don't think ahead of time about what the consiquences are.
All of them lead up to addiction

I'm with you. Smoking is digusting. I was in the elevator yesterday and although the building we work in is non-smoking, the elevator smelled of cigarette breath.

It's pretty gross to me when I smell cigarette smoke because it's a reminder that someone's left their breath all over the furniture and walls.

Yuck.
