Health Benefits

Potatoes are a very popular food source. Unfortunately, most people eat potatoes in the form of greasy French fries or potato chips, and even baked potatoes are typically loaded down with fats such as butter, sour cream, melted cheese and bacon bits. Such treatment can make even baked potatoes a potential contributor to a heart attack. But take away the extra fat and deep frying, and a baked potato is an exceptionally healthful low calorie, high fiber food that offers significant protection against cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Our food ranking system qualified potatoes as a very good source of vitamin C, a good source of vitamin B6, copper, potassium, manganese, and dietary fiber. Potatoes also contain a variety of phytonutrients that have antioxidant activity. Among these important health-promoting compounds are carotenoids, flavonoids, and caffeic acid, as well as unique tuber storage proteins, such as patatin, which exhibit activity against free radicals, and newly identified blood pressure-lowering compounds called kukoamines.

Pretty much any white starches (breads, pasta, rice, potatoes, etc.) are simple carbohydrates which translate to sugar.

Think about the potato famine in Ireland. It was such a disaster because that was often all people had to live on, so, given that you should realize how fattening they really are.

If you want to make potatoes less fattening I recently read a report that for some reason if you cook a potato, let it cool down and then re-heat it, it somehow reduces the sugar in it by 1/3 - 1/2.

It was on a Yahoo news article, I think.

Non-wheat grains like rye, buckwheat and any of the other darker, heavier breads are lower in carbs and better for you.

From what I have read from "The Carbohydrate Addicts Diet" you can get all of the carbs you need from just eating vegetables and meats. Nothing else is required. The veggies give you the vitamins, carbs and fiber you need and the meat gives you the protein you need.

And, yes, fried food adds carbs because of the flour used.

If you are diabetic they claim that it will also get your blood sugar under control better.

By the way, alcohol is just another form of sugar, fermented sugar. This diet would be good for a recovering alcoholic since the craving for alcohol is just another craving for sugar.....get rid of the craving for sugar and an alcoholic should have an easier time staying off the booze.

I was on it for about a month and the first week or two are really hard because sugar is the most addictive drug on the face of the planet.....over caffeine and alcohol.

I had the "sugar shakes" for about a week and kept craving sugar until about the end of the second week.

I noticed after that though that I didn't have to eat nearly as much or as often after that.

I lost about 10-15 pounds which isn't bad since I'm 5' 3" and weighed about 140 pounds.

My ideal weight is 128 pounds for me because I have a large bone structure with shoulders like a football player.

The other key is to drink a lot of water since it helps flush out your body, especially the kidneys.

There are some reports that Americans consumed approximately 5 pounds of sugar a year back in the 1800's. Today that estimate is in excess of 165 pounds every year.

No wonder there is so much obesity and diabetes today.

Also, using other sweeteners like honey are better for you too. Try to stay from the artificial sweeteners since they are nearly all made from chemicals and I have no clue how much of those chemicals the human body can really digest and how much of them stay in the body as extra fat.

Good luck.

It depends what type of diet you are on. If you are on the South Beach or on a lower carb diet (which works the fastest and best btw) then its terrible to have the potato or anything white. In these diets stick to whole grain and healthy carbs only. They digest slower in your system and don't turn to sugar like white carbs.
However, if you hate watching carbs, then simply count calories. Don't go above around 1800 cals per day and around 50 -60 grams of fat, and you will still lose weight. If you exercise a lot you can have more calories than that.

Eating potatoes a couple of times a week is not going to make you gain weight. Obviously don't fry them or add a ton of fat to them. I use Smart balance light. It's very good and has 40 calories per 2 tablespoons.

I don't put potatoes in the same grouping as other white foods. White bread and regular pasta are refined..potatoes are natural.

Potatoes by themselves are not bad. Only when they are eaten deep fried or with lots of butter (baked) will they cause weight increase. Eaten in moderation, they are good. A few countries have potatoes as their staple diet - I think Ireland is one - and not every person there is overweight!

Potatoes are a good source of pottasium, Vitamin C and B6. But green or sprouted potatoes are to be avoided as contain solanine, which is poisonous.

I was told that potatoes get a bad wrap! It's not the Potatoe that is bad for you, it the stuff we like to put on them. Sour cream, butter, gravy, etc. If you are a diebetic, it is recommended you eat a small amount of potatoes because of how your blood sugar reacts.

If you're referring to a diet to lose weight the answer is terrible.Potatoes have a lousy glycemic index score and are digested and turned into glucose very quickly thus spiking your insulin levels. The insulin takes blood sugar that is not needed in the blood at that time and can't be stored as glycogen and changes it to fat to be stored in your adipose tissue.BAD.Yeah please listen to the person that won't HERE a bad word about them.Grammar is often a good indicator of how reliable the information is.HEAR me?Joe
