It's refering to slave owners and the people in the field that cracked the whips to keep the slaves working.

Dear God aka Steve,
Why do you put such strange questions in my head? Why do you insist that some words are bad and some words are good when it is so clear that meanings and usages define what a word is? This one started with white bread and led to cracker and the words don't matter at all, but the intention does. You could insult someone with any word at all if you say it with the intention to insult. It is easy to insult someone. You could do it without even trying. The more difficult and more rewarding thing to do is to get through a day without insulting someone. That's a real challenge, but most people can't do it.
You for example, God/Steve. Have you ever not insulted someone for a whole day? Don't knock it if you can't do it.

I'm from Chicago and like being called a cracker (craker). Better than being called a northern hypocrite phony SOB.

Not to me - I am white - it means white - you can't insult me by calling me what I am. It goes back to negative connotations but I did not live in that time and I do not dwell in the past. If you called me a cracker I would howl with laughter!

I've wondered this myself. I think it's one of the dumbest "insults" I've ever heard. If someone ever called me a cracker (or whitey or honkey or any other racial insult) I'd probably wet my pants from laughing. There's absolutely nothing offensive about any of those terms...

For the same reason 'cow' or 'heifer' might be an insult.
If its not my name - I take offense to it.
