Do we think that if we didn't tell them, they'd drive like madmen/women and try and kill somebody? Isn't it one of those ridiculously useless phrases like "have a nice day?"

NOTE: last time I put something under quote, someone asked me where my quote was... so here's the quote: "Drive careful" just so there's no misunderstanding.

3M - That's good, "because there are other crazies out there." But what if someone had told one of those "crazies" to be careful? Would that make You one of their crazies?

Lots of accidents happen in the first few minutes after someone starts their trip to wherever they are going because they are thinking about where they are going or things that happened before they got in the car, etc.

Someone telling them to "drive careful" hopefully reminds the driver to actually mind the road, instead of thinking about the ham sandwich they just finished.

Yes, it's a phrase that has come to not mean much, but often we're psychologically hardwired to say something to finish a conversation that's also a "well wish", an expression that's an expected ending to a conversation that also shows our care for the other's well-being.

It's just a saying of well being. It's not necessarily meant to be advice. I say it when someone is driving late, the weather is bad, they're tired, they're taking a long trip, or they've had a little to drink. It's mainly a way for me to say, "there are reasons you shouldn't be driving right now, but I know you have to. I hope you make it to where you are going safely."

Because it can be pretty crazy on the road sometimes and you care and want that person to arrive at their destination in one piece and safely. I've usually said "Have a safe trip."

Maybe because we care about that person & knowing that there is alot of crazy drivers out there, we want them to drive carefully as not to get in any kind of accident. & maybe they'll subconciously think about their driving & be careful.

Good question. It makes us all think & wonder.
