The Coronation of Napoleon, by Jacques-Louis David.

It makes me feel as if I were standing right in the middle of such a ceremony, it conveys the greatness of Napoleon, about to Crown his wife as Empress of France, removing the crown from the pope's hands and doing it himself.

Pre Rapheletes every time, the glorious colours reflected off a white canvas and the hidden symbolism. The painting of Christine Rossetti is stunning, as is the Lady in Red. De Vinci code followers would enjoy the hidden meanings behind them.

Starry, Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. It is full of energy and emotion and a sense of wonder at the stars in the night sky. It was painted along the Rhone River at Arles, France. I saw it in New York City.

The Luncheon of the Boating Party by Renoir is my favorite. I have seen many great works of art, but this is the only one where reprints and on-line pictures cannot do justice. It seems to glow with a light from within and I am awed by his mastery of light and color. You feel the lightness and the energy of the youth, drama, fun, and love. It reminds me that being young, no matter the era, is much the same.

It's hard to choose just one. I saw Portrait of Madamoiselle Legrand by Renoir in the Philadelphia Art Museum and the girl's eyes in the portrait really captured me. Her eyes look very real - she looks wistful and sweet. That was the first one I thought of so I guess I liked it a whole lot. I also love Degas. I want to paint ballerinas. :)
