Even though I am a christian I thought it was odd that all my family on my dads side wont listen to what my mother (atheist) has to say about her beleifs.

DawnL my mom dosent listen anymore because she thinks god has foresaken her. My brother has always been sick and when he was 4 he got bone cancer. For two years she spent all her time for 2 years in the hospital with him and me left at home 3 hours away alone with my dad who hardly was there. I was seven at the time by the way. And although he lived my mother gave up her belief in god and left my dad and met another Atheist and she changed her beleifs.

I like listening to atheists, they think some pretty interesting things. I do not, however agree with everything that they say. I find for the most part, listening to people and understanding what they think actually makes them more likely to listen to what you think. Does your mom make an effort to understand their beliefs or does she simply dismiss them as ridiculous superstitions (as some atheists are wont to do)?
Unfortunately, strong beliefs can make it hard to consider what others have to say.

I'm not closed minded. I know the truth from what is not the truth. And I can discern the difference between them by what the Word of God says (Bible). If I told you my watch was a work of evolution, and it came together in all its many pieces through many random and accidental causes, would you believe me? If you know the truth, then you wouldn't accept my reasoning. Only a fool would say, what's right for you doesn't have to be right for me. The watch had a maker. That's the truth. You can accept it or not, but either way, I'm right, the watch had a maker. You can pretend that the watch came from evolution, but it doesn't change the reality of the watch.

When a person knows they are right about a thing, they can afford to close their mind to alternative choices. Although, I would be nice to her, and listen to what she has to say, just so that I could have a chance to share how wonderful that Christ is with her...I would tell her that just because she closes her eyes and hides in the hall closet, doesn't mean that the sun isn't shining outside, and that there aren't hundreds of people playing in the sunshine, and using solar energy. I would try to encourage her to come out and enjoy the sun with me, because I know how beneficial it is.

It's a shame that your family is that way. Not all Christians are closed minded and I actually tend to wonder about that myself. I don't understand how some of these people can call themselves Christians and act the way they do toward non-believers. You can't help bring people to God if you're not willing to listen to what they believe. You need some kind of ground to use to help them change their minds.

I think that if that's what she believes then fine. Now it's your job as her Christian daughter to be the best example of a Christian as you can be by being kind, loving and open yet strong in your faith and beliefs and always trying to do what God would want.

Christians are "closed minded" because the prerequisite to being a Christian demands for one simply not to question... or to keep the questioning at a minimum. You simply "have faith". As a result, Christians probably aren't used to entertaining various thoughts on spirituality.

Well I'm sorry. I think it's important to listen to what other people have to say and what they believe. You don't have to agree with them, but everyone wants to be heard and we need to know that people truly listen and care about what we say. This is a good reminder to me! Someone said once that God gave us two ears...and only one mouth....for a reason! *smile*

you will find that there are closed-minded and open-minded people of all faiths, not just Christians.
Those who are closed-minded are very insecure in their faith. They will not allow any kind of contrary message for fear it might cause them to doubt their own beliefs.
Those who are open-minded realize that the only way to strengthen your beliefs is to continually question them.

cuz they think that they're religion is the ONLY one out there and care nothing about other people's beliefs. i dont blame them for trying to save their friends and family, but if other people strongly believe in different things..so be it.

Not all Christians are "so closed minded". You are generalizing about an entire group of people.
