My daughter is 17 months old and shows some signs of being ready for the potty. However, when we try to get her to sit on it without a diaper she freaks out. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have any suggestions to help get her over this? She loves sitting on the potty with her diaper, it's just when she's got nothing on. I know 17 months is a little young, but I figured since she's showing some interest, it couldn't hurt to try to start now. Thanks!

Guess I should have mentioned, it is a little toddler potty. I don't try to get her to sit on the big toilet. And she sees me go on the big one all the time...it's hard to go into the bathroom and not have her follow!

Take a day at a time, maybe talk about it a little, and keep on trying once a day then increase it to twice a day. My daughter started potty training when she was 18 months old, she is now 20months old. Every kid is different, some start early some will want to take their time.
Have Patience.
Good luck

Some kids are afraid of that big hole. Try getting a potty seat that fits over the toilet that is very colorful and has a smaller more comfortable sitting space for kids. A word of advise: Don't pressure her, make it a good experience for her. Give her a small hand held toy to play with while she's there the couple of minutes. There is also a Potty video that helps them feel more comfortable with using the toilet. Good Luck! Mother of six.

It might be cold on her little bottom. Try a seat warmer or a different seat.
If you haven't yet, take her to the store and let her pick out her very own potty chair or seat. She might be more willing if she is sitting on something of her very own, not someone else's. Kids like to have their own special things that are just for them and no one else.
If she's still scared, then don't force it. It will come in time and when she is ready. The more you push, the more she will push back.
Good Luck!

Go ahead and let her sit with the diaper a bit just to get used to the sitting and the idea of why she's there. Let her observe mommy when she goes potty. I know being an exhibitionist for your child is not the most appealing idea, but she needs to get a sense of how it's to be done.

Thats about the same time my girls started showing interest on the potty. Let her keep her diaper on until she sees you on the toliet without anything thing on. Or you can even get the potty at walmart that sings when you pee into it. She might love that. Dont rush it though.....she will probably take her time....good luck
