Firearms are like tools, the one which works "best" for one job may not work as well for another.. I am going to recommend more than one and let you sort them out, to your needs..

For short range(under 150yds) deer, I prefer the Marlin 336C 30-30 load - 150gr Federals.

For longer ranges(over 150yds) deer, in open country, the Remington Model 700 .270 - Load - Federal 150gr BTSP - You might also take a look at the Ruger Model 77, it was just not a good fit(feel) for me...

For Elk my favorite is the 300 Weatherby Magnum - Load - 180gr WBY Mag.

Take a look at a few, find something you like, then go try them on for size, make sure they "fit" you. In other words make sure the rifle feels right when it's at your shoulder.

the yardage at which you can put the first shot into a 6 inch circle after running 50 yards climbing a flight of stairs and doing it off your hind legs by the way try a 7mm/08 rather than a 7mm magnum. less muzzle blast and the balistics are nearly the same with 140 grain bullets

There are: .7x57mm Mauser; .7mm Remington Magnum; .7mm-08; .7mm Weatherby Magnum; .7mm Remington Ultra Mag and the .280 is actually a .7mm.

They are all good deer rifles and all of them have been used to take Elk.

Any one of the 'magnums' is considered a 'thousand yard' rifle, however, can you hit a deer-sized animal at that range? Within practical hunting range, two to three hundred yards, any .7mm will get the job done.

Take your pick.

If you are talking about a 7mm mag then it is powerful enough to kill large game as far as you can accurately shoot it. I shoot a 300 win mag and downed a bull moose at 500 yards, and the ballistics of the 7mm mag are very similar. As far as what grain bullet to use it depends on what you are hunting. Use boat tails for long range shooting in the mountains.
