Ok. I used to want to be a vet tech. But I realized that I love animals to much, and I would have to deal with sick animals, and putting animals to sleep. My sister is a vet tech, and thats what she wants me to be.

I'm 14, going into highschool, so I know I have a lot of time to decide, I just want to know so I can decide what classes I want to take in highschool.

I think I want to be a nurse that takes care of new born babies. Because the pay is good, and I like babies, you dont have to go to college for long. But every idea I have my sister shoots down, shows me all the negatives, not the positives. She only wants me to be a vet tech, but I dont want to be. How do I deal with my sister and decide what I want to do when I grow up?

WOW!!!Good for you ,you are really goal oriented it sounds like...you must be a great kid, your sister is only expressing her opinion, but I can tell you that Vet techs have a very limited income and you have good reasons sited for changing your mind. A lot of nurses begin to desire that field at a young age because it is truly a calling more than just a job. Sometimes being compassionate as you are makes it more difficult ...in newborn it would be the drug babies...but if you learn to take those tears to the one who refreshes your soul you can have a very satisfying and well paid career. There is a lot of competition for that area of nursing so the sooner you get involved the better, candy striping ROP programs, make connections in a good hospital early through volunteering or your first job.Don't forget to have fun and make a lot friends along the way, "stop to smell the roses"

Listen, follow your heart--it is going to be your career, not your sister's--so do what makes you happy. Nursing is a great choice and pre-natal is a great branch of that!! You are right pay is good and there is a serious shortage of nurses today. Also, there are so many different areas of nursing you can go into, or change into later. Just be prepared to work long hours--but you will help a lot of people if you have the gift....good luck to you! (also if I were you I would take a quiz that points you in the direction of best career choices--they have them online, and your school guidance couselor can help you with it too, it is really interesting to see what you answers reveal--i did it and it was spot on!!)

Try to cover all your bases as much as possible in areas that interest you and add in a few just to see. Check out pre-requisites at post-secondary institutions for fields that interest you, like the nursing or something with animals.

Know that a lot of people don't have specific jobs decided before they go to post-secondary. They have general fields they would like to work in but there are a lot of jobs within those fields.

Also, keep your ideas from your sister! She's not letting you be you. Better to talk things over with the school's guidance counsellor.

If you choose a career that someone else wants you to be then you might not be happy. My mom wants me to be a teacher but I dont want that as my first career. I plan on being a Model Home Interior Designer and maybe later in life go back to school and become a teacher. Dont let your sister push you into something, do what you enjoy doing and suceed in it. :)

Sound like you are science orientated, nurse - vet tech.

Take all the science and math courses you can.

Volunteer at a hospital, nursing home and animal shelter. Not only will you be able to find what you like it looks good on your college application..

I am 53 years old and I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Tell your sister a retired grandma told you that.

There is plenty of time. And do what makes you happy - your sister can't live your life, and you don't need to live hers.

I think you will do just fine, no matter what you choose to do.

Stop listenting to your sister. She is not going to live your life for you. Since you said you like babies, maybe you could become a pediatrician. Be whatever you like and what you think will make you haapy. Good luck in high school and the rest of your life. :)

Don't just do what others want you to. If my mother did that, she'd be dead. Just take classes in a few different things in 9th and 10th grades, and you'll find out what you like!
