I believe that religions are more alike than different, they set guidelines on how we should interact with others. There's good & bad in everything, I accept them at face value without judging whether they are right or wrong.
Before I get attacked for asking this question...I should tell you I was raised protestant...prayed & attended church for several years. I believe more in the power of prayer because it's the good intention of others to help us overcome obstacles in our lives. I've read somewhere that "in the subtle realms, intention is action."
When I help someone on the street, I never think of religion, I think of a fellow human & how I would feel in their situation.
I don't feel I'm better or worse than anyone else...just a person.

I am an atheist. The fact that god reveals himself to no man is the one thing that drives my morality. I think too many people feel that things are in God's hands and are less willing to help others because of that. Me, I feel that if I don't help out when I can then why should anyone else because ultimately, I believe that all we have is each other and it's up to us to determine the kind of world we want to live in.

When I help someone, I always refuse compensation. I simply say "If you ever see someone else in need of help, then take it upon yourself to do so. I think that acts like this are contagious."

I hope it works.

I do believe that all we have is each other . . . in fact, I know this to be the case.

Your question is a little deeper than you may realize. We don't have ANY religion to fall back on, no 'savior' who is going to make everything alright, no prayer that is going to fix anything at all.

So it is truly up to you to behave well and reach out to people, up to me to do the right thing all the time, and up to all of us to stay 'in the moment' and not look for some afterlife or other unearned benefit to take care of us.

This is the insidious nature of religion that saps the humanity out of our interactions with other humans day-to-day. When someone's energies and feelings are directed toward some metaphysical presence and otherworldly concerns, it reduces or eliminates their ability to take care of the here and now, and renders them nearly useless as a quality human being. Plan for later(in the week, maybe), but live now.

No, I do not agree and the reason why is that we have God. In my interactions with others, I try to see Jesus in every other person. When it comes to "good and bad" in everything", we have to accept that there is a source for the good and the bad and the good is of God, and the bad of Satan. We at some point have to take a stand against the bad and speak up because to simply accept it is not a moral option as taught us by Jesus. We must take a stand but do it in love and caring of others, not condemnation or judgement.

I agree. However it is the good intentions that are done without thinking that are the ones that lead to heaven. There is a saying about the road to H*** being paved by good intentions. So just do unto others... etc, etc, etc.

Me too, I agree and was also raised protestant. But, I'm an atheist now, and it's for the best, I'm sure.

Nope!
Your family will fail you, your boyfriend will leave you or girlfriend, your friends will abandon you but the sure thing you have in this world is Jesus.
