As a member of the military, I find it to be in extremely poor taste to protest at a service member's funeral. These Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen are fighting for something they believe in, and noone should be disrespected in this way.
On the other hand, one of the things I fight for is the right to free speech. While I disagree completely with the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church, and personally think they are all ignorant SOBs, the fact that they are allowed to do what they do is one of the things that makes this country great. I just wonder how they would take it if members of the military protested at one of their funerals.

possibly because of the fact President Hinckley felt that us going into Iraq to guard the liberty of those under the thumb of a ruthless dictator substitute into the stunning element. additionally, the ousting of Hussein from skill certain a greater look after center East. of direction, Fred Phelps will do something to proceed his fifteen minutes of acceptance. The church isn't new to protest. individuals of different denominations tend to stand outdoors the two the convention center or Temple sq. telling human beings falsely how the Mormon Church is the two racist, a satanic cult, or instruct a faux doctrine. so which you would be able to desire to the Westboro Baptist Church, you're welcomed to make fool of yourselves. Impeding on the upward push of a funeral procession gets somebody a while in penitentiary. there's no clarification for that bill. i'm against a bill that's in my view interior the guise because of the fact the McCain/Feingold bill proscribing who can deliver marketing campaign donations to a canidate. yet another afront to the 1st substitute.

I think that they are making a laughiongstock of themselves, and that they will get theirs. Not only is their claim ludicrous - that the soldiers are being killed as punishment for homosexuality - but it is disrespectful of the soldiers who have gone over there, and who are still over there. No parent needs to hear that their child deserved to die for the "sins" of another, especially when they died defending the Constitutional rights that ensure that these losers can protest at their children's funeral. Sadly ironic, I guess. While I respect every American's right to free speech and to assemble peacably, I personally feel that the government should step in on this one, and put an end to it, constitutional rights or not. I have a feeling that there is not a court in the land who would back tis "church."

I think they need to drink the purple Koolaid and get it over with already

Also, when people talk about sanctity of marriage, I think they need to look at the husband's and wives who belong to the Westboro Baptist group. Most of them are all of the same family sadly. Whoever let them in the gene pool should be shot.

I thought it was wrong long before the Iraq war erupted, when the crazy Phelps clan was picketing at the funerals of victims of gay-bashings (e.g., Shepherd) and those who have died of HIV-related illnesses. It should be illegal for those funerals if it is illegal at military funerals. I myself think that one of the limited permissible impositions on First Amendment rights is that the observance of religious worship services in designated religious sites and the performance of rites for the dead should be impermissible locations for protest.

Murder is murder whether you wear a uniform and carry a government-issue rifle, or you dress in civs and carry a home-made rocket launcher. The sooner we all realize that, the better.

I disagree with thier picketing because their protest has no purpose other than self promotion. What do they think they're accomplishing? i'll tell you, nothing other than making themselves look like idiots.

I think Fred Phelps and his inbred clan are all insane with hatred and should be sterilized.

That said, I think it's horrible that they do that, but as long as they're kept a good distance away so the mourners aren't exposed to them, you really can't stop them.

There is also a big organization of motorcycle people, I don't know their name, who go to funerals like this to protect the mourners and make sure the lunatics can't get close. I think that's pretty cool.

Horrible and disrepectful. There is also a group of biker vets that go wherever they are picketing and rev motorcycle engines and cars and such so that the mourners can't hear the protestors. I've even see pix of fire engines and cops doing the same and blocking the view of the protestors.

to picket any funeral is wrong, that being said to picket a funeral of a soldier who died protecting his country...
well those people obviously never lost anyone like that because their people are cowardly and without honor.
we should ship them to Iraq and then let them tell us how they feel.

Terrible. I've read that most "members" of the tiny church are actually related to the pastor. Not really a church, imho.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how they justify that.
