I once left a job with only an overnight's notice, because I went to the interview for a new job and I was hired on the spot. The new boss asked me to start work the very next day (it was a school job and classes were starting the next day). I felt bad, so I offered to go back to my old job every afternoon for the first week until they could find someone else to replace me. So in your case, 1 week is better than my overnight notice! Don't sweat it. Good luck on your new job.

I left a job on no notice once (fortunately I was going to have to quit in three weeks anyway).
I had asked for a specific night off, plus an early paycheck to leave town for Christmas.
The boss originally said yes to both without reservations.
About a week later, she reneged and said if I didn't work that night I couldn't get the paycheck early.
After thinking about it for about half an hour and with the boss (coincidentally) away, I told the senior worker who wasn't even a supervisor to tell the boss I was leaving and walked.

No, don't feel bad about it.
2 weeks notice is the average and the only problem could be when applying for another job. They may ask how much notice you gave to your last job, but even then 1 week should still be okay. Mostly what they don't want to hear is that you walked off the job without any notice at all.

Heavens no! Especially if you got a better job. I had an Airline call me at work on my job and wanted to know if I could be there the next day. I told my boss, and he said, man go for it...Money is the name of the game.

You may feel guilty especially if they have treated you well. but depending on the company policy it may be "at Will" meaning they have the right to let you go with/without notice also you can quit the same way. Check it out

If your position is easy to refill, why feel bad? Some times you have to just move on. Think... if you had given more notice, you might have lost the better job to someone else.

you know you got to do what you gotta do...i left a job with a 5 minute warning and did not care because they had treated me pretty shabby.and i had been at the job for 3 years.once i gave a 3 week notice and they begged me to stay and offered me more money, but i was packed up and ready to move to fl..they couldn't offer me $ till i was ready to leave...i think it depends on how you have been treated by your boss...don't let it eat you...

Most of the times now being gracious and givong 2 weeks does not matter and many companies let you go immediately.

If you're asking the question, you already feel guilty. And yes, it is polite and proper to give a minimum of two weeks. The main thing is that you may have p-o-ed your company and they may not give you a glowing recommendation.

Ummmm...a weeks long enough. And anyways, with high employment people are searching for jobs so it will be easy to replace you. Good luck with your adventures in life with no job.
