I understand the importance of prayer for such things as forgiveness of sins, but I don't understand why we pray to god "to give us our daily bread" or to save us from some calamity etc.

The reason I say this is because there are always people in this world that are hungry without food and calamities are a part of nature and this world will always be full of pain and sorrow.

People pray for food and protection from calamities, yet these events still happen.

God works in His time not ours . Prayer is our personal connection and relationship with God . Bad things happen in this world because of satan . Matthew 24:6-8 , Satan just wants to kill and destroy and bring down as many people as he can to join him in hell
