How many years of college/med school do you have before you start your residency? Just curious.

I'm not planning on going to med school. Actually, I'm trying to catch someone in their lie, and I need to know exactly how long it is before you get to residency.

Actually-it was some trashy poster on here that was claiming her 24 year old boyfriend was in his 3rd year of residency. I was sure it couldn't be true but I had to ask someone who actually knows it to be fact.

She's a total idiot. I think she's actually just a compulsive liar. Unfortunately, she deleted the questions referring to her stellar boyfriend because she didn't like some of the things I had to say about her. Oh well.

You can begin medical school after only 3 years of undergrad (if you're in an accelerated program). If this dude graduated high school when he was 17 and had 3 years undergrad (let's assume) and 4 years medical school (which is minmum) then he would have to be at least 26 years old to have already completed 3 years of residency. He could be 24 if he skipped 2 years of grade school (k-12). That's the only scenario that I could think of.

p.s. why was that girl bragging about her boyfriend? if her boyfriend's smart does that mean that she's smart? i think she's just glad that she got herself a future doctor (assuming he doesn't screw up)

I'm going to med school right now and it took me 4 years of undergraduate. To start my residency, I would have had 4 years of med school, but I took this year off, so it'll take me 5. But at the very least, 8 years when you include college. I'm assume the person in question is from the US, but he/she is from another country, many countries have a system in which med school starts right after high school and usually last for about 6 years. My husband is from Spain and this is what he had to do.

I hope that person isn't telling people he/she is a resident if it's not true!

Im currently in medical school. Depends on the unis and college that u are in. Mostly, minimumly it is 5 years. Some other college here in india is 6 years.

My 5 years is not included of the internship. So basically its 5 years.

Don't worry about that. What your need to know is that you end up studying for the rest of your life.
