what is needed for a parakeet?
a cage. Not the ones the pet store sell for parakeet size, but a cockatiel size one should be okay. Make sure the bird has plenty of room to move. Perches of varying diameters, this is important for good foot health. And two to three toys to start with and about one a month after that. Either a good quality seed or pellet diet along with fresh fruits, vegetables and grains.
How much does it cost all together?
a cage will be about $30.00
the perches about $4.00-5.00 each
toys from $1.00-$5.00 each. you should try to find ones made from diffrent materials.
good seed $4.00-5.00
good pellets $5.00-10.00
cuttle bone $1.00 - 2.00
What is basic care?
Budgies also known as parakeets need at least an hour of attention a day. They need fresh food and water and the paper on the bottom of the cage changed daily. Seeds will require more cleaning than pellets due to the hulls.

Make sure your bird has no discharge from the nasal area. Also it should not be sleeping while all the other birds are playing. The feathers should not stay ruffled and they should not be just sitting on the bottom of the cage. Look for an active bird.

You will need a good cage with 5/8" bar spacing. Prevue Cages are better then a Hagen Cage, the Hagen cages plastic bottoms are really thin and if they fall they break easy. Now when you go to find your Parakeet I recommend finding a private Breeder that hand raises them because they are so much friendlier then older one you get from a Pet Store. As for toys, be careful what kind you buy, I have seen a Parakeet get their head stuck in a toy and it broke it neck and died. Parakeets love bright colors. The more lively the colors, the more interesting the toy. Little wood blocks, pony beads, and leather straps are all excellent media for parakeet toys. Hang them near perches for ease of playing, or hang them out in the middle of the cage to encourage exercise.
As for the cost, it depends on how much you have to spend. You can get cheap cages for like $10 to skies the limit. A Breeder may sell the Keet for around $20 but you should shop around before you decide to buy. If you need any other help please contact me.

A good cage. Don't go with the cheapest and smallest, give it plenty of room. Plenty of toys, birds are very intelligent and need to be entertained. A few perches of different sizes and materials, but I've never heard anything positive about the sandpaper slips that go over perches, so leave those out. Maybe a calcium supplement such as a cuttlebone.
Oh, and as far as food, I prefer to use Zupreem for my birds. Pellets are much better than seed. Beyond that, just fresh fruit, maybe some music to play while you're not home and I think you'd be good to go.
A decent setup, I'm guessing, would be $50-75.

hi there. A parakeet needs a large cage with dimensions adding to at least 60 inches. they also need toys perches in different sizes, food, treats, vitamin supplements, food containers, water tube, and pet carrier for trips to thevet. when i first got my parakeet, i spent about 100 dollars on all of her stuff. It was considerable cheap because she has a LOT of things. You will understand when you make your trip to the pet store. there are tons of things you can buy for your bird!

i have a parakeet she is very easy to take care of you have to buy them lots of toys and bird food every day give it fresh water................. and you have to give your bird fresh fruit and veges......... when ever i leave my house i put my TV on to entertain her and some times i put music on.......... you also have to buy a cage that is big enough 4 it to spread its wings they are pretty cheap and every day you have to let it out and let it play and you should play with him/her too.this is how you pick out a good one you look for the color you want and see if the bird has clear eyes and all of its feathers and comes up to you and you should hold the bird to make sure thats it is nice and does not nip a lot.i love my parakeet she can do tons of tricks!!! i hope you get one they are the best animals to have as pets!!!!
