It seems most people forget that there can be more than one correct point of view. Just because I don't believe the same as another person doesn't make either one of us "wrong" it does make discussions difficult if we forget to agree to disagree

Religion is designed to bring people together until the point where and individual does not want to be brought together. Then they are not one of "us".

Then religion deteriorates to a circle the wagon mentality. everyone inside is good everyone outside is bad. Most religions have been able to reform most of the fanatical, other haven't done so well.

When you ask a question you will get someones opinion. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and sometime **** come out.

Also intelligent discussion is not what you get in this format.

Since when is Christianity or religion supposed to bring people together? One major sociological function of religion is to establish an "us vs. them" dichotomy. Religion serves to establish group identity, by emphasizing the differences between groups. This strengthens the groups identity. One need only examine Judaism, one of the oldest religions, to know this is true. So,yes, religion does bring a GROUP of people together, by automatically setting them "against" another group. The only problem is that, as the group grows, internal divisions must continually occur, to maintain the integrity of the groups identity. This is most apparent in Christianity, a "conversion" religion (one that seeks to convert "others" ) that, unlike Judaism, which does not seek to convert others, must always seek to reestablish group identity through ever more closely defined "factions." Christians as a group can no longer agree on anything; the nature of God, the purpose of the Bible (history or parable), the way into Heaven (good works, faith alone, baptism?), etc. It has itself become a means of "group identity" through division.

Lol- no dude, you're getting the point. Most religion, with the exception of Buddhism, Tao, Wicca, paganism....(all find a way within their belief to live and let live) claims to be the "way" and in so doing immediately creates division. Big difference in my experience between the religious and the spiritual- compassion and tolerance being at the top of the list....

The bible either unites or divides. There is no middle ground for God, you are either with him or against him. Hence those that don't want him for their King become his enemies..

Phi 3:18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:
Rom 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

Christians can not stop evangelizing as it is a commandment from the Lord himself. God requires that everyone at least hear the Gospel preached. They may reject if they want, but is is a commandment from Jesus himself..

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

oh the best, by far, are the Boy Scouts. they are supposed to be teaching our youth of what the world could be like. the children they reach are so impressionable... but they insist on teaching separation. they teach how being different is wrong and a poor quality. they teach children the things that stick with them until they are old, pathetic rapists of the earth.

thank you christianity.

Christianity cannot bring people together. As they try convert more people the undercurrent will also be mighty. The moment Christians stop their conversion activity everyone can be friends.

Some Christians are very testy...and they try to force their beliefs on you.Me, on the other hand, I just pray for the person...and leave most questions alone. I don't like to push my beliefs, it turns off the listener.Which is not my goal.

Because some people can't accept the fact that other people don't believe the same way or things that they do. So, instead of trying to learn and understand, they hurl insults and call people names.
