I had this same argumant w/ a co-worker.
Anything he said he tried to justify by using the Bible. To someone outside that faith it's just a book, one with some good lessons, but a book, nonetheless.
It's good to have faith, but God gave everyone freewill and the ability to think outside the box. That kind of thinking has allowed radical progess in everything.
Prior to that openness, the world made little progess until the 16th century and the free-flow of ideas came about with the printing press.
When you can only defend things from the point of view of a book, you end up either sounding like a cookie cut religious person, or just a kook, depending on your presentation.
You have the ability to think, question, and reason.....don't waste God's gifts only us humans have.

Haha--I think you already know the answer to that one. You'd get a quick thumbs-down with no further thought.
And yes, it DOES push people even further from those beliefs. It puts people on the DEFENSE, not in an inspiring mood.
Furthermore, it shows a lack of intelligence when you can't really come up with your own answer, in your own words--you just copy and paste from the Bible.
To stargazer...: Yes, it IS "religion and spirituality", but Christianity is NOT the only religion out there...a lot of people act like it is, and that's annoying too.
To NicoleKadman: They don't make you put your hand on the Bible anymore in court, thank Ra. They just ask you to raise your right hand.
To BetaFishy: Do some intelligent paraphrasing, and then reference the source material. We have an extra field for that.

Good Question. Your are right. It is a turnoff to nonbelievers...but, understand that the Bible is the only physical link between man and God. It is the "rule book of life" that we as christians live by. You cannot answer a question about a Corvette with a John Deere manual, and in the same sense, the Bible is our only "true" guidebook to Christianity, that is why so many people use it. I am a christian, and yes, many are too pushy. TURNOFF! You don't convert by force and alot of people don't understand this. One of my closest friends is a philosophy major, we have great conversations about christianity. He is a non believer and I'm a believer. He will never see the light by force or intense arguments. Stay calm and when you get insulted smile. God's allowing u a project. Understand, we as christians help them see the light, not stick it down their throats. If they choose to accept it, wonderful, if not, hope they take sunscreen! net_class82

Some of us do not know Necronomicron (Book of the Dead)?
Sometimes, the Bible is used to demonstrate which answer is proper vs. anything present in other texts - Christian or non-Christian.
I could use Playboy to justify the Bible, but the Bible had nothing to say about hedonism and nudity.

We use it because that's where the system of our faith is rooted and grounded. If it pushes people further from my beliefs, it's because I either offended them somehow, or they don't WANT to listen to what I have to say when I quote Scripture. Besides, I couldn't answer a Mormon question using a Mormon Bible because I'm not Mormon and am not versed in their beliefs. But if I were to answer it spiritually and intelligently based on what I believe, then it's up to that person to garner from it what they want.

what's Necronomicron?
people do this because they believe that the Bible is the word of God. God is what they hold higher than anything in this wolrld. So of course it stands to reason that they would use it as reference against non-believers. If you had something to tell me concerning your belieds, I would sit and listen. I would probably also consider what you are saying as something worth listening to. who knows. I am open to all people's beliefs, but I will never change mine.

Why should they not use the Bible to answer a question if they perceive the answer to be therein? Are we saying that an answer must be limited to those sources that the asker deems worthy? Of course not. Answers are defined by the answerer, therefore the validity of the source from the asker's perspective is irrelevant.

That is a GOOD question. I use it because that is what I live by. Either I believe what it says or I don't. What else do I have as a resource. It's not just a matter of quoting the bible. One has to be not just be a hearer but a doer of the Word or else it is of no effect.

More christians and muslims should read the Necronomicron. It would change their perspectives radically.

I think a lot of the questions ask us why we trust the Bible. They couldn't ask without bringing the Bible into it, so why shouldn't a Christian include Bible quotes in their answer? I wouldn't be trying to convert you either. Explaining my beliefs doesn't automatically imply that I should defend my religion or persuade you to it.
