Thanks for the info all!

David, you strike me as a true Alaska lover. Could you tell me how one would be able to book a seat on one of these cargo flights?

Yes, in the summer. Condor flies twice weekly from Frankfurt to Anchorage in the summer. Westboard, they stop in Whitehorse. Eastboard, they go directly.

There used to be a lot more connections in Anchorage when planes had to refuel between the 48 states and Europe/Asia. But planes have longer ranges now and everyone wants non-stops so we lose out.

Some cargo airlines, especially the ones running 747s, can take 20 or so passanger spots and all the cargo jets land in Anchorage, especially to Asia. (Cargo doesn't care if it takes another 2 hours, it lets the cargo airlines reshuffle freight and if you carry less fuel, you can carry more cargo).

Other than Condor or cargo carriers, you're limited to Northwest through Minneapolis, Delta through Atlanta, Alaska through Seattle, Portland, Chicago, San Francisco or LA, or Delta through Salt Lake.

in case you're taking an outstanding boat from Alaska to Russia, then you definately could get it....A German television team made an identical excursion some years back - yet, in basic terms from the different direction. I observed it on television right here. Greetings from Germany...
