Running, just like any other cardio type of exercise, burns up calories. And when you combine it with a healthy diet, you will be able to lose those unwanted LBS. Try to do your cardio at least 20 minutes a day. If you're new to this or you get dizzy while exercising, start with 5 minutes, then work your way up to 10-15 minutes as your body gets used to it, until eventually you can do at least 20 minutes.

Yes and no. Running burns calories. If you are overweight and your caloric intake is high running, walking and other cardio-type exercise will burn up the calories but to actually lose weight you need to get control of your caloric intake.
The key is balance. Carbs, Protein, and Good Fats.
And running is a good thing but be aware that it is an "impact exercise", which is another reason balanced nutrition is so important, it's helps the body repair itself.
First chance you get, take a nutrition class.

No matter how you run the numbers it comes down to you have to burn more calories than you consume to lose weight.

One pound is equal to 3,500 calories. That means if you eat nothing for 2 days, you should loose one pound. People who claim to lose more than 5 pounds a week are being tricky.

Use running because it's a good calorie burner and walking in combination, for about an hour a day. Limit your intake of calories, and expect to lose about 2 pounds a week. Then keep that discipline going.

running and walking are not the same thing. Metabolism is a big issue when loosing weight. You want to accelerate your metabolism and that is something you do by running, not walking.
