He doesn't need them. They want to serve him. And this is one way they can.
God created them, but does not need them. Yet, they still want to serve him. Odd?

Our Lord does what our Lord does. There are many things of this world that I cannot fathom and that science cannot explain. I am constant wonder of the creation all around and the complexity of life. In my very short time of existence, though I am educated and well traveled, I don't pretend to even have the slightest understanding of how this universe is put together, let alone heaven's. If the Lord needs armies, the Lord needs armies.
This is a great question. I hope you really spend the time to really think about it and explore all the possibilities. Don't sell God short either - you may need him someday!
Peace

The answer is that God does not NEED armies of angels to do anything for him. He could certainly do anything himself that he needed done. However, it is in the nature of God to divest himself of any power which is capable of being divested. In other words, he doesn't keep any power to himself which he can possibly delegate to another being. He creates certain orders of beings specifically to delegate certain powers to them. There are many, many orders of beings he has created to administer his universes. There are not only various orders of angels, but also Melchizedeks, Creator Sons, Power Directors, Material Sons (such as were Adam and Eve), and many, many more.
You can read about these various orders of beings as well as much more about the nature of God, the history of this planet and the complete life and teachings of Jesus in the Urantia Book.

Because we are in a spiritual warfare, the one third of the angels that fell with Satan, demons and principalities are hard at work to do Satan's bidding, so God has his holy angels to help him.

Because the myths would not be nearly so interesting without the drama of armies battling each other.

Because god is all about killing and destroying anyone who disagrees with him and doesn't worship him. Just read the Old Testament.
