Stick with the King James. It's a remarkably accurate translation and the brilliance of the language doesn't make it any less accessible. The NIV is for Jews.

NIV. That translation is in plain english and tends to be easier understood.
Many Christian schools and churches teach and use NIV because of how easy it is for all ages to understand.
