When brushing with an electric toothbrush, is it better to actually brush your teeth (in an up and down motion), or to just hold the brush against each tooth and allow it to spin?

Different brushes are different. Read the book that came with yours and see. The Oral B, for instance, needs to have some brushing motion and the Sonicare works best if you just slowly guide it all along the areas of your teeth that need to be cleaned, but with little or no typical brushing movement. You have to move it around so that it will reach all the contours of your tooth, but you are not supposed to "brush" with it.

Hold it against each tooth, slowly rotate it to come in contact with each surface of the tooth, and let it spin. The toothbrush should be doing the work for you!
