As a British police officer i would first like to say that to all you people that make judgements about the effectiveness of this nation's constabularies, try doing our job for just one day.
Our force is one of the few in the world where we serve the public and are not an extension of the military. I am proud that we are able to resolve some of the most violent of situations without ever having to resort to drawing a firearm.
We are equipped with other tools, including unarmed combat skills. This takes more effort to learn and use effectively than pulling a trigger. But it is a lot less fatal!
To arm all police would be wrong. Some officers do not want to be put in the "me or you" situation where someone has to get hurt. However, the increase in shootings and the killing of police officers is a great concern.
I believe that there should be an increase in trained officers across the country, but not to arm all officers as "general issue".

For the main area American Police are outstanding with firearms. i don't comprehend approximately this British Cop or what sort of interest he has. yet i do no longer think of he's qualified to decide American Police. i'm going to admit however that American Police possibly a sprint out gunned. as far as law enforcement officials wearing as a count of habitual. I truthfully think of it would be irresponsible for a uniformed police officer to no longer carry a firearm. who're you going to guard while we live in a society the place they're different weapons. What are you going to apply while confronted by applying an armed subject, your verbal Judo skills? comparing England's sort of crime to u . s . of america's is like comparing Apples to Oranges. there's no assessment.

Most of the british police are armed infact most carry fire arms in the boot of a car; and have done so for years, my brother-in-law is in the Police Force here in the UK and I know what ia m talking about from personal experince. When i Lived with them over ten years ago now he had a rifle in his boot of his car!

God no! Would you seriously feel safer having men with guns ON THE STREETS? The English police armed units seem to do a good line in killing innocent men, and these are the trained elite, so no one would be safe when every idiot bobby has a six-gun.

personally I dont think we should I think the dangers arising due to the police holding arms is much greater than the risk posed to them or us.
in my opinion the risk is grossly over inflated.
7/7 only 56 people died, thats no where near the 180 that died falling down the tube escalators that year.
I think more guns equals more shooting and more death
I would rather live in a free society and risk terroist attrocities than live in a police state with so much restriction in relative safety.
however you cannot stop terrorism
so why restrict all our live and endanger us even further by carrying guns

Yep. I've always said why not just shoot bad civillains who are caught in the act doing the worst - murder, robbery etc. So yes, people do deserve trials in court, but when you caught and try to escape, should our offices still insist on judging them? Murders should have instant death - paying price for taking one persons life.
As far as 'carrying' a weapon, they should be used more often to stop people like burgualrs, shop lifters, and so on.
We need mass shootings for all the bad in this country - seriosuly, just line them up, and fire. It would be far better to do this than to waste jail cellss that are becoming over-crowded, and to set n example.
