I've had these bizarre oral ulcers on the tip of my tongue and occasionally on the side for the past month (come and go). They start out looking just like a canker sore or a swollen taste bud and then quickly swell up very large become extremely painful and cause the surrounding area to be white/red. I've been to the doctor's three times already and have been treated for thrush. I have also been tested for STD's in my mouth and came out negative. It was suggested to me that they were stress ulcers but would they seriously last this long- with no relief? Any ideas?

It's the side of my tongue. Haven't gotten them anywhere but on my tongue. After they heal the taste buds are completely gone- (bald spots on my tongue)

Thanks for such great answers!

I cannot say for sure without an exam or more information- sides of the mouth, do you mean your cheeks? Sounds like apthous ulcers, which have multiple causes but look the way you describe. You need to try a toothpaste without Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, it is a chemical they put in lots of toothpastes that can aggravate and cause these types of ulcers. Also, try a low-acid diet- no fruit juices like orange, grapefrit, tomato, or cranberry, and not lots of tomato based things like sauces, etc. Rembrandt makes a special toothpaste for mouth ulcer relief that doesn't contain SLS. Also, there are several prescriptions your dentist can try to see if they help.

This happened to my husband for years, while he was in Engineering School. During that time, his mother died and his father had a heart attack. It was very stressful on him. Now that that stress levels have gone back to "normal" (whatever that is), he doesn't get them much anymore. Only when his stress is high, does he get them. So I think it could be stress. It would probably be a good idea to get them checked for cancer if a dental professional recommends it, but if cancer is not the case, I bet it is stress. My husband began exercising regularly the past few years, and that seems to have helped quite a bit (I'm sure it lowers his stress).

I like Blondeambition's answer, but you did not say anything about trauma. It is possible that you have a rough spot on one of your teeth or that you are biting your tongue due to a bite that is slightly off. These are things that you'd have to have diagnosed by a dental professional.

If Blondeambition's suggestions do not work, go get it checked out.

has it been tested for cancer?? if so(and it came back negative), It sounds like it can be from stress... for some people, stress can be horrible for the mouth.. like for instance... nugs or it can be called trench mouth..it when your gums bleed alot from stress...I hope its something minor for your sake...good luck!! wish I could help more
