i think toy poodles are extremely intelligent, if not THE most intelligent dog breed. my toy poodle saved my grandpa's life once. he knew so many different words and phrases and had such a unique personality! every time he wasn't feeling well, he would run in the bathroom...he even taught himself to sit by the bathtub if he was going to throw up, and he waited until someone lifted him into the tub before he threw up so that he didn't make a mess on the floor.
in my whole life, i've never come across a more intelligent dog than mickey. i've been around a lot of dogs in my life, but none like my toy poodle.

I just HAVE to weigh in on this one. Like all people, I used to think that toys were a separate breed. Then I worked for a boss who had a wife that bred them. They are the same breed as standard poodles. A toy is an "accident" of nature. If a standard has 8 pups, on average one of the eight will be a toy. To increase the odds, breeders will breed a male toy with a female standard. (Female toys are NEVER bred. Pregnancy will kill them!) In this manner, the odds of having a toy increases to 6 or 7 out of eight. In case you're wondering how it is possible to breed a toy with a standard, just picture MANY phone books stacked up.
Anyhow, just thought you might find that info interesting. And, YES, I think toys are very smart. Simple observation tells me that virtually EVERY toy has trained its owner VERY well.

Poodles are very smart and versatile dogs. In fact a team of standard poodles once placed fifth in the Iditarod, so after that they were banned just because they didn't fit the macho image of the sport.

I don't think it is the smartest of all dogs. Any dog can be smart just like people. I think that the herding group of dogs is a great example. It also depends on training of the dog and how early you get to them. The younger they are the easier to train.

Standard poodles are really smart dogs. They make excellent guard, service and family dogs. Minis and toys tend not to be that smart.

I have had several types of dogs since I was little and hands down our toy poodle is the smartest. He was the quickest to train and he managed to surprise us almost everyday. His name was Rusty ;-)

Since I own a toy poodle....I have to agree...
My little dog's name is "Sassy" and she is a card...She was left to me by my mother when she passed away in 2004...Mom told me to take care of her little girl....My sister owned Sassy's mom and dad, so she has been in my family for 8 years...( 8/6/98).
I believe she is smart, because she has me wrapped around her little paw...She will not let me out of her site and sleeps beside me in bed every night..
Sassy likes to watch "Jeopardy" because she sings along with the theme song...and also sings along with both the American and British theme songs to "Antique Roadshow"......She is a true blessing ....
