how can you maintain curly hair with out using so much gel?

Try using things to control frizz. it will make your curls look healthy and shiny....If you dont want to wear curls use a flat iron.
I would rather use moussse instead of gel...its softer.

I have naturally curly hair and I don't use gel. I find that it makes my hair kind of greasy and crusty at the same time. Ew!

Pantene has a curl defining mousse that I SWEAR by. I just use a palm full when my hair is wet. Flip your head over so your hair is hanging down in front of you...work the mousse through your hair...then scrunch and let air dry. It makes nice curls without the frizz!

I use VO5 curling mousse for my natural curly hair and also use Aussie Sprunch. It doesn't get the look of hair gel with being hard and brittle.

Tigi has a great line for curly hair called Curls Rock. I suggest trying the curl booster, or curl amplifier. They are both great products that will hold the curl without the stiff sticky feeling.

well my hair is so straight, that the only way i maintain it is braiding it overnight, when its wet, and putting gel on the braids. then when i take them out, i don't brush it, and it loks so good and lasts long! then i brush out the gel and it looks like an afro! =]

Get a curling shampoo. Then get a friz defier and put it in. Then crunch the hair while you add a bit of hairspray

i use this stuff that is made especially for curly hair and it makes it not frizz(some stuff works better then others). and i also use a special kind of conditioner.
