Is it possible to make bombs/explosives out of paper being the primary raw material? An airport official once asked me to handover an envelop to another local airport official at my destination point. I refused for some obvious reasons.

A book soaked in Nitric Acid would produce the explosive compound nitrocellulose but it would be obvious from the smell that something was wrong with the book

They may have thought you had some chemicals in the envelope especially when you did not want to hand it over, and on the other hand though it is not paper,a friend of mine was a navy seal and he was taught to make explosives out of orange peels, goes to show if you know what your doing I guess anything is possible.

No but you could have powdered Anthrax inside the envelope. Or some other poison included in the label adhesive.

Personally I think it's stupid what they do in airline securty. I've been avoiding flying for this reason. You never know what they'll take away from you or why.

Honestly you should have reported this incident to an airline agent or another officer, good job not taking the envelope. That is what is considered suspicious behavior.

That's new, lol. Never really thought it was even remotely possible. Unless... the raw materials you mentioned were made of tiny & fine grains of gun powder that when used properly; an explosion (minor) could occur. Am watching wayy... too much espionage movies! =P

I don't think so, but explosive or flammible chemicals could be soaked into the paper, and of course paper is quite flammable itself! Of course, if you extend this to it's logical conclusion, they should have taken all your clothes and extracted all the fluid from your body too.

They should have never asked you to handle an envelope to another person.. They have people that do it.
