Brit - you should get a passport. It protects you as it proves you are a US Citizen and while you must obey Mexico laws, you will have access to help from either the US Consulate or Embassy depending on what Country you are in. Last time I went to Mexico, all I needed was a Driver's license. However, Mexico is having some serious crime and small revolts going on right now because of the recent elections. Now really isn't the best time to travel to Mexico. Consider a more Stable Country such as Belize, Costa Rica, or even the Dutch Antilles. If you go to the US State Department website, they will give you the info on entry requirements for any Country.

I am mexican, and if you are flying then you need ur passport, you can not fly out of ur country without a passport, besides now even crossing the border are asking to have your passport ready, so should defenitly do so...mexico isnt dangerous, even of elections nothing bad will happen the only dangerous place is mexico city, it is a very busy city, dont wear anything to glamourus, always use taxis from your hotel. Although you have to be a bit more careful than other places it is sooo worth it, it is full of history and tradition. It is a bit late to be asking about your passport thing cuz it takes about 3 weeks! I wouldnt travel with your birthcertificate, what I would do is call the airline which you are flying with and ask them. About the birth certificate, maybe a copy would be better...have fun! Mexico is amazing!!! specially the shouth and center like oaxaca, veracruz, jalisco, etc

You won't be leaving "America" to go to Mexico. Mexico is part of America. So is Canada and all of the Latin American countries in Central and South America. You need a least a registered birth certificate to go to Mexico from the U.S. A change of attitude would help also.

Have fun in Mexico City. I lived there for three years. It's a beautiful city as are its citizens.
