pre booking is the best way though sometimes splitting the journey and buying separate tickets for legs f your journey can be remarkably cheap.

You don't say when you are going but here is an example of a weekday service :
depart Sutton 09.06 arrive London Victoria 09.36
Cross London via the Tube to Paddington
depart Paddington 10.30 arrive Paignton 14.04
If you book in advance you can get a Leisure Advance single for as little as £14.50 adult and £7.25 child. These are subject to availability though. (singles each way are cheaper than normal returns)
Go to your nearest station for the best advice. They will be able to see if there's any cheap tickets left for the day you want to travel.
Alternatively try www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk

This probably isn't much help, but I'm near to Sutton and recently travelled up North, I spoke to National rail and basically the ticket prices varied from £15 to £130 (How??) depending on how far in advance you book, if you can book a couple of months in advance, you can get v cheap train tickets.
They have a website but it is better to call as they can be helpful, I'm not sure on the number but just do a google search.
Best wishes, and have a good time!

some tickets are more cost-effective if bought in boost. it may also be that there are a restricted type of decreased value tickets allotted, and positively they could promote out before. I actually have found that assistance on a thanks to hit upon a more cost-effective value ticket is to bypass to the railway value ticket place of work once a probability, and ask the cost ticket clerk to address the suited fare for the adventure, and it per chance that vacationing at a fairly distinct time to the only you've initially meant, that a more cost-effective value ticket is available. head to head communicate is optimal to internet surfing, because one is chatting with a professional who's conscious the device and is prevalent with the position to discover what you want, at the same time as you, because the shopper, can confirm how versatile you'd be. consumer available web pages provide neither of those reward.

I could tell you but I've been on a train where a fellow passenger had two children that they chose not to control.
