My first was almost 4, my second was 3 and my third was only 1. Whenever they can climb out is the best time to convert. Make sure the toddler bed is close to the floor in case they roll out in the middle of the night. I also invested in a side bar to keep them from rolling out. I also layed a few pillows next to the bed on the floor. AND....... make sure the bed is against the wall on one side.

When he started climbing out of his crib...around 2 years old. His bed, too, converted to a toddler bed. He will be 3 soon and still sleeps in that. Eventually it will convert to a double bed.

We changed to a toddler bed when my youngest son learned to climb out of the crib by himself at 18 months. We have three others and they were all between 18 and 24 months when we switched. Hope this helps.

My son was 14 months, but he was ready for it. Most people transition them when they start climbing out of their crib themselves. If you feel your son is too young to be in a toddler bed but is wanting to climb out of the crib, they make "crib tents" where it's just a netting that comes up and over the crib. they are pretty neat and very stable. I have attached the link from e-bay, they run about 50 bucks which isn't too bad concerting it is your child's safety.

The general rule is to keep them in the crib until they can get out of on their own. Usually around 2-2.5
An easy way to make the transitions is to put the toddler bed in the room while the baby is still in the crib. Then while you are playing with your child, put your head on the bed and say "night night" and pretend that you are sleeping fake snores and all. The child with think that it is great fun and learn that is was the bed is for.

The week of her 2nd birthday I moved her from her crib to a twin bed without rails. She's too tall to bother with a toddler bed. Move your child when you're no longer able to keep them in the crib, when they start climbing out they're in danger of fallingout and getting hurt.

My son was 18 months, but we skipped the toddler bed and went straight to the twin. However, I don't reccommend it because now he still comes in our room every night/morning sometime before we get up. Our daughter we left in her crib til she could climb out of it and she still sleeps all night in her own bed. I say leave them there as long as you can. You get more peace and they are safe!

My son started climbing out of his crib at about 14 mths. We ended up getting the crib tent to keep him in till we got him a big boy bed. We put him in the bed at about 18 mths, and for weeks, he would cry and finally pass out on the floor....then we would move him back to his bed. He is now 3 and goes to bed without fuss or fight. If only I could get my 11 mth old out of my bed...lol

Once they started climbing out of the crib it was time. I made it fun for them by letting them pick out a new bed sheet set. I made sure to have a night light in their room too.
