A stray cat has shown up and I can not determine its sex! How can I tell its gender?

Obvious dangly bits tell you it's a male.......if there's none it's either a neutered male or a female.....

I don't have any experience in it, so perhaps someone else will be able to give you further info.

At a very young age it can be difficult to tell, but it's very easy to tell an adult male, even if it's been neutered. Males have testicles. From behind look at your cat when it's tail is straight in the air. If you see 2 small sacs directly beneath the anus, it's a male. If you don't and the cat is very young, you will need to place the cat on it's back and look between it's legs. Males will have a penis, females a vagina. Both just appear as small holes, but on a female the distance between the anus and the vagina is much smaller than on a male. Again, it's hard to tell if this cat is just a kitten. I hope you can rescue the poor kitty. It's an automatic free pass into Heaven if you do! ;-)

One more thing! If this stray is not neutered or spayed another way to sex the cat is by it's behavior. In the summer, adult female cats are almost in constant heat which makes them super sweet & affectionate. An unneutered adult male is much less friendly and will almost never let you pet them or pick them up. They will be somewhat friendly if you offer them food, but will still generally shy away from you.

This can actually be hard. We had a cat once that we gave a female name... yeah we changed that to Pepper after we took the "female" to a vet and they informed us we were wrong... Oh, and female cats will spray (pee all over the place) also... A LOT... if they aren't fixed, so that actually isn't a good indicator, as someone else suggested. So, just see a vet and they will tell you.. or watch them clean themselves... My boy cat's little... um peppee comes out every now and then when he bathes, and they do have obvious balls until they are fixed. Then they shrink up a little bit.

Does it have balls? Then it is a mature male.

Is it a young cat? Look at its "diaper area". If it looks like a colon : then it's a boy. If it looks like a semi-colon ; then it's a girl.

Or you could take it to the vet.

Be aware that folks at the pet store do not necessarily know. I once got a "female" cat at the pet store that turned out to be a male.

Look under his/her tail. If he is a "whole" (unneutered) tom, it should be obvious. You'll see his testicles. If he has been neutered, look closely and you may see two very small remnants of the sac. Otherwise, it's probably a female. Don't feel bad, though, if you're wrong — even the experts are fooled at times.

First, can you catch it or did you already? You have to lift it's tail and look at the hind end. If it's an un-neutered male, it's pretty obvious ;-)

It can be hard to tell if it is a kitten or a neutered male. My males still have their scrotums and they are smaller than an unneutered males are.

If you can look under the tail the male has only one opening, his anus. The female has two, the vaginal opening and the anus.

if it has a thin face ti's probably a female, or if it's calico colored it's a female. If it has a fat face with protrouding cheeks it's a male
