I was diagnosed a few months ago with a torn labrum. I have since started my career and was just curious as to how long the surgery and recovery take. If I had the surgery on a Friday when could I be back to work (I have a mostly desk job)?

Depending on the damage done to various parts or part of the labrum (there are five sections to the labrum: Superior Labrum, Anterosuperior Labrum, Anterior Labrum, Anteroinferior Labrum, Inferior Labrum) the types of surgery vary.

Some of the surgeries can be out-patient, but not without risk. Check with your physician/surgeon to see when you can return to your desk job. After surgery, the arm is to be kept in a sling for 4 to 6 weeks, but that is not to say you can't go back to work during that time. I suspect he may advise you to take a week off, to get used to the sling and see what you can and cannot do.

This is a quote from the Hospital of Special Surgery site:

Rehabilitation

"After surgery, you will need to keep your shoulder in a sling for THREE to FOUR WEEKS. Your physician will also prescribe gentle, passive, pain-free range-of-motion exercises. When the sling is removed, you will need to do motion and flexibility exercises and gradually start to strengthen your biceps. Athletes can usually begin doing sports-specific exercises after six weeks, although it will be three to four months before the shoulder is fully healed."
