Another great boxing question. Tony Zale was a very tough fighter and his fights with Graziano are classics! Thomas Hearns had great boxing skills and a bomb in his right hand. I believe that Zale would have a hard time getting to Hearns because of his reach and Hearns would control the fight with his jab and win a unanimous decision over the very tough Zale.

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion (too bad conservatives don't see that when the accuse liberals of everything under the sun). Now we must admit that some opinions are more objective and some of them are arrived at through a more thoughtful process.
Zale - W 67 (KO's 45) TF 87 - W pct 77% - KO pct 52% - wins over Graziano[2] - KO'ed by Graziano, Cerdan, (Jimmy Clark, Johnny Phagan and Frank Glover[all average fighters]) - #41 ranked puncher (overrated as puncher because he only has a 52% KO rate).
Hearns - W 61 (KO's 48) TF 48 - W pct 91% - KO pct 72% - wins over Cuevas, Benitez, Duran and V. hill - KO'ed by Leonard, Hagler and Barkley - #18 ranked puncher - #67 ranked fighter
Much better boxer than given credit for
Sometimes you (me) think things but aren't sure then something happens to show you that you are right on point.
The fight - Evidently Zale believes the hype(about himself) and stands toe to toe with Hearns. Zale is KO'ed face first just like Duran and Cuevas in the 2nd rd.
Epilogue - How could anyone think (That's what I mean about valid opinions) that Hearns would not KO Zale? Whether or not Zale was overrated or not , he was KO'ed by 3 average fighters {check box-rec]

Tony Zale was a very good fighter in his day and against Hearns, he would have to chase Tommy around the ring, Tommy would win a close decision in 15 rounds, a hard fought bout
