Hitting your head hurts. Right now, it is getting your son something he wants. Attention at the time he bangs his head or later, even a distraction from something else going on.
Replace the behavior with another. When I leave the house, if my daughter is starting to cry, I tell her to call me on the phone. She calls (the babysitter dials) as I stand there and I talk to her on the cell phone as I get into the car and drive to work. This gets pretty boring for her after a couple of minutes and she is off to play.
As for banging the door with his head, practice playing knock knock with his hands. Open the door and say BOO when he knocks properly. Make it a game. Then warn him when you go to your room. "Mommy's going to her room and she's closing her door for privacy (my 3 year old knows that word-good for potty training). If you need me, just knock." At first, the knocks will be often, as your son tests out his new skill. It will taper off, though. If he bangs his head, say " Mommy is waiting for you to knock with your hands" Open as soon as he does.
Believe me, no one wants a sore head. He just needs the skills to take the place of head-banging. He does not need to see a doctor.

My 2y.o. had the same issue since he was 1.5y.o,he would bang his head on our hard wood floors, and was keeping a knot in the center of his forehead. At his check up I asked the pediatrician and she told me," he does it for attention so don't give in to him ,none at all. Two things can happen, he will realize ouch tbis hurts and no one will respond to me,and he'll stop, or he'll knock himself out and realize it didn't do any good." After a few times he will quit, just ignore him when he does it and don't look at him or say anything. My son quit after only a few times and an occasional time or two since. She was right. And the next time he wanted my attention and behaved properly,I stopped what I was doing and responded to him to reinforce the positive behavior. I use this advice all the time, i ignore his negative behavior such as tantrums or shouting, and respond only when he behaves in a desired way. So far in not having any more problems with him hurting himself for attention!

Looks like he's doing it to get attention. Try totally ignoring him when he does this. Sneak a peek when he is not looking to see if he might have really hurt himself. If not, leave him be.
Call the pediatrician and ask if he wants to look at the bulge. If the doc thinks you needn't worry, I would not even ice it. Just ignore the little guy so that he sees that his action will not get him the attention he wants, and hopefully he will stop (and try something else, LOL).
Good luck!

are you sure that he does not have tourette syndrome? I am 15 and i have that, occasionally i knock my head against the wall and such. It is a tic and i can't help it. I am sure that he doesn't want to hurt himself, so that may be what it is. I would got to some websites regarding this disorder and read through them, see if he has any of the other symtoms.

I think you should have him seen by a child psychologist. Some children pound their heads against their pillows but it sounds as if there is a deeper problem here and even a trend towards self-destructiveness.

Take him to the Dr. and make sure he is OK first of all. Then, talk to them about these problems. They might have some better suggestions.
