How does a Kosher violation effect the spiritual state of a Jewish person? I am specifcly interested in an explanation from an Orthodox perspective. If you quote from the Talmud, please provide a link or reference.

A person who eats unkosher food is unclean. You have to atone for your sin by admitting it and not doing so again. No sacrifices are made because the Temple is no longer in existence. Instead of bulls, we offer the prayer of our lips. Hosea 14:2. True repentance is not committing the same sin when faced with another opportunity to do so.
