I see a brilliant answer has already been posted, Jim; Because one is true and one is false. Could it be any more clear? No one will be able to answer you with rationality, merely speculation and conviction in their tales.

Jim,
By asking "why" on questions of faith, you are missing the point. People believe for a wide variety or reasons, but to pick their own faith apart with rationality is not one of them. Faith is not about logic. It is not about empirical evidence or the lack thereof. From your focus on such things, I get the impression that you really don't understand the nature of spirituality.
Consider the term "leap of faith", then read the novel The Plague by the celebrated existentialist Albert Camus, if you have not done so already.
This is not to say that I do not understand why you are posing such questions. Nurturing your spirituality and faith should be a private matter, but it too often gets dragged into the political arena. This is no one's fault, but the result of circumstances in which we have to try to live and work together. For example, we HAVE to talk about what gets taught in the classroom and how. This is what it means to chart our course as a democratic society.
In any case, I think you concern centres more on creationism as a political force rather than a system of faith held by some members of society. If that is so, you would be better off considering how we can better shape society to accommodate different attitudes toward spirituality, education, sexuality, etc., rather than questioning other people's beliefs. Systems of beliefs will change, and they will come and go, but ultimately we all have to live together.
To me, it does not matter in the end why we came to be here. To quote Candide, I must tend to my garden.

Some people insist on quantifying every quality they find. That is a fundamental of empirical evidence. Over quantification, or materialism historically. You may need to switch lobes to see more than material.
But you'd be one up on the more widely accepted gospels, if you left a blood sample, or something to validate FSM for thousands of years. Hmmm...what would FSM put in a time capsule? Where would you hide it? Hmmm...

"I don't have to prove creationism. You have to disprove it. "-bradhen
Excuse me while I literally laugh my butt off for a moment...

Okay - now that that's out of the way, let me get to my point. Wait - I think that was my point. There is no evidence which is why the refuse to produce evidence!
They simply do NOT get the metaphor. There is just as much proof of God as there is of the FSM.

each complicated device that I actually have considered, and considered the beginning of, has had some type of intelligence in the back of it (many times human). Any time that a complicated device is uncovered to random activities, it receives a lot less orderly. Yahoo solutions would not lend itself to rigorous proofs, yet research entropy. that's thrilling.

Good luck finding a creationist that knows what empirical is without looking it up. All they have is "I don't like evolution", and "babies being born". No proof. Scares me that people believe creationism.

I love how people try to present "evidence" of creationism, when creationism isn't even falsifiable, therefore can logically have no supporting evidence.
Is there a fundamentalist out there that even knows what the hell that even means???
I doubt it.

Because both want you to have a certain amount of faith. Faith has nothing to do with empirical evidence.
