If mom is a great cook, DEF start there!
The trick to cooking is to get a core group of recipes that you cook well. A good chicken dish, a beef fish dish, spaghetti sauce, and a beef stew recipe.
All of those recipes....with a few easy ingredient changes ( amounts, items ) can become an endless number of other recipes. Once you get comfortable with those you will find it much easier to branch out into more adventerous cooking :D
A great cookbook I'd reccomend is a local fundraiser cookbook, if you can find one. Churches usually put them together, sometimes schools or civic groups and you can usually find them at used bookstores. The thing about these cookbooks is that the recipes are usually fairly easy to deal, they're just homespun cooking.
If you can't find one, then I'd say get the Betty Crocker Red cookbook. Some of the recipes get more complicated but its also full of good cooking techniques, with pictures.
Good luck!

It depends on what you want to cook. I would first ask mom for the basic stuff and then when you feel like you have the hang of it, then go and get a cookbook to learn about other things to cook....good luck!

If your mom is a good cook, watch and listen to her. Otherwise, I suggest you watch the food network on Saturdays from 7am-2pm.

When I started to cook, I would just watch hours of Food Network. It really helps to see someone actually preparing the food, explaining everything step by step.
I learned A LOT from Rachael Ray's 30 Minute Meals show, because all of the recipes were simple and really quick. I went out and bought a bunch of her cook books and all of the recipes turned out just great!
You can go to www.foodnetwork.com, search 30 Minute Meals and print out all of her recipes for free.
Good luck sweety!

Start with a simple favourite dish of yours. Somethng easy to make which you love. and only YOU know the perfect flavours. Ask you mom to make it for you and observe, ask questions.
Then after a few days make it for yourself. Once you taste it, you'll intuitively know what needs to be added/deleted.
Good Luck:) Learning to cook can be fun
