Jesus says, in Matthew 5:33
"Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.'
"But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God's throne; "nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
"Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.
"But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

Swearing an oath and using profanity are two entirely different things. The Matthew quote has nothing to do with using profanity.

I used to be extremely strict about not using profanity, but I curse a lot more than I used to, especially when driving or when tired.

As for swearing an oath--I believe very strongly that one should not promise what one cannot deliver and always make every effort to keep a promise. It is immoral to swear falsely under oath.

Some one is trying to play the prophet and make themselves feel all holy and special. Not that it is a bad thing. It is good to get reminders every once in a while. Only problem is, in this day and age, yes hardly ever mean yes, and no hardly ever means no. People who have a history of throwing around yes's and no's often have to increase the intensity of their yes or no by swearing, because the other person wants them to. Me, I don't use curse words. But I do swear on something every now and again.

Most swear words are acronyms, such as Forbidden Unlawful Carnal Knowledge that the Brits would hang around the necks of people they would put in the stocks, or Stand Here In Tribulation, and us guys favorite, Can't Understand Normal Thinking, so I just say the meanings, it confuses people more and also gives me the necessary breathing space. After all, if your gonna be damned for being anal, you might as well do it up right.

It is best not to swear. It is usually a sign of lower intelligence that people need to swear to express themselves in every sentence. Having said that, the effect of a well chosen swear word at the right time is irresistable.

I do not use vulgarity nor do I take an oath. There are to many other words to be used to replace the vulgarity that can proceed from ones mouth.

Swearing to me is using God's name in vain or foul language or cursing someone.

I don't swear. I use God's name when praying to Him or when I am talking about God (respectfully) to someone else.

I made an oath at my wedding to my husband & before my God.
