Steam them with beer and sprinkle them heavily with Old Bay. I'm originally from the Eastern Shore of MD and I know TONS of crabbers....we have several crab pickin's each summer.

Anyway...were the eyes are, insert your knife and pull up the top part of the shell (the red part). There are these grayish feathery looking things, DON'T eat them.

Cut the rest in half through the body, one set of legs on each side, makes it easier to get to the meat. There should be some lump meat..bigger chunks, and then you have to dig in to get the rest, being careful not to break off too much shell. The stuff you dig in for is called Backfin.

Then don't forget the claw meat.

Also, the back of the Old Bay can should have a GREAT recipe for crab cakes if you have any meat left over.

Are you talking about Blue Crabs? Or regular sized crabs? WQell either way you can boul them in water seasoned with alot of Old Bay seasonings, I usually add extra hand ful of sea salt. (rock salt is good too). To pick them , Break each leg, starting with the smaller one, away from the body by pulling it with your thumb and pointer finger. You want to pull the leg and the body sctions with it. Pick the meat from the center part of the leg, then break each leg section away, crack it then pick the meat out of it. When you get to the claw, My fav!, break each section apart , then crack them open and enjoy! WOW,, now I am craving crab!

There is fibrous tissue near the outer edges scrape it away. then crack shell, claws and legs pull meat out. melt some butter and dip away
