I would recommend a family trip to Peterborough, Ontario. Peterborough always has something happening on the weekends. Here are just a few of the things that are fun to do in the area.
Every Wednesday and Saturday night there are free concerts and fireworks at Little lake right downtown. There are also several food booths and souvenier booths, etc set up on the site, 50/50 draws and a draw for a local work of art all at the festival.. The following website outlines the next four weeks of concert performers.

There is a marina there as well and houseboat tours as well as a boat tour that takes you from the lake up the Ottonabee River through the Peterborough Liftlocks which are the highest locks in the world. The festival and tours etc. are all located in the same location on the lake. If money is not an issue for accomodations The Holiday Inn is located on the waterfront right beside there.
On the other side of the lake a 10 minute drive away is Beavermead Park which is a beautiful huge campground with soccer fields, playground, beach, paddle boats, gardens, and trails. http://www.beavermead.com/
Just Northeast of Peterborough lies the Petroglyph Provincial Park which has over 900 petroglyphs. It is an excellent place to take kids. http://www.ontarioparks.com/english/petr.html
In Peterborough there are several museums including the Canadian Canoe Museum which houses the worlds largest collection of paddled boats including birchbark canoes etc. You can watch craftsman building canoes and participate in planned events. http://www.canoemuseum.net/default.asp
Every Saturday there is a huge farmers market with over 100 venders including produce, arts and crafts and a wide array of other goods at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. http://www.farmersmarketsontario.com/marketinfo.php?id=117
About a half an hour away in the Port Hope area there are also some things happening over the next week.
In the Port Hope area there is a corn roast, arts and crafts festival and heritage day festival taking place.http://www.farmersmarketsontario.com/events.php
There are so many attractions in the area that I'm sure there would be something of interest for all of your family.
I hope these suggestions are of help to you. Enjoy your trip.

What about a Thousand Island tour in Gananoque. It's east of Toronto, you can take the boat ride and see all the islands and visit Boldt Castle.

Try the Northwood Ranch in Seagrave just north of Port Perry. You can get really close to the animals and it's pretty awesome at feeding time !
