LA is a big place... with lots of colleges. It depends what school your looking for. Traffic is crazy and I would never opt for a place super far from where I work/got to school. There are lots of great places to live... it just depends on where you want to be. It also depends on how much money you want to spend on a house or for rent. You really should take a visit out to LA before moving here to see which area and what not best fits your taste and preference. LA is great... hope you enjoy it :)

I'm going to have to second the opinion of the guy who said Pasadena. BUT, it depends on where you are working. You don't want to move to Pasadena and be working in Long Beach and have a 1 1/2 hour commute each way. Everything is farther away than would make sense. We used to live in Pasadena and my husband worked downtown which is 12 miles away. His commute was 1 hour door to door. There are lots of colleges all around LA, so pretty much wherever you chose there is something.
I'd also vote for the South Bay. If you want an area a bit more out of the way, it is beautiful! You can live near the beach and the beach cities such as Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo are fun. It's expensive but nice. If you want to be near there, you can do Torrance, which is close to the ocean but more resonably priced.

Id highly recommend PASADENA. You wont be right in downtown which will be nuked in th coming jihad, and Pasadena offers a lot of cultural advantages. It even has a metro system running through it so you could hop on it to get to downtown LA if needed. Pasadena is about 10 miles northeast of LA..Most other places in LA are rank... It will sort of feel like Chicago (a bit) but much smaller.

If you plan to work in downtown LA a metro ride will cost $3/day and takes about 30 minutes from Pasadena. You can alternatively by a metro pass for about $50 a month which will work on all the metro lines and bus lines too (i dont recommend riding ANY bus in LA).
Santa Monica beach area is a nice place to live with lots of shopping and stuff to do. You wouldnt be too far from Farmers Market, Hollywood and the Grove either.
Lots of colleges and uni's in LA... most are sleezy unless they are private.. thats why Id stick to Pasadena since they have a nice college I linked to. Hermosa Beach is nice and the beaches around there... Dont get into Orange county area though... the place is filled with rapists and other kooks who put razor blades in playgrounds.

The cities in the San Fernando Valley might have what exactly you are looking for
There are several colleges in the area and lots to do
Look into places like Sherman Oaks, Woodland Hills, Tarzana, Burbank, Studio City and Encino
Pasadena is also a great location to research as well

Just stay away from South Central L.A. Its gang infested and I am often scared for my three sons-10, 16, and 18. They are harassed almost daily to smoke weed, join gangs, and wear white tshirts and hang out. I try to keep them busy, but we have to come home sometimes. There are a few junior colloges like Los Angeles Southwest college, and Trade Tech, they are ok but not in the best neighborhoods. It is good that you want to live in a good area and have plans for college. I hope things work out well for you here. Good Luck.

Why don't you wait to see where your work is going to be or school or what ever you do....before you sign up for something long term...Because it is crowded what seems like a short distance in miles can be a long slow distance in time.....
