Carefully!
Take a small section of hair, run the tongs (semi-closed) down to the tip (without loosing the hair) then close. Wind the tongs up to about an inch short of the scalp, hold for 30 sec and unwind - spray with hairspray and repeat
good luck - it takes years of practice but you'll get there!

It depends on how large you want the curl. I'll assume you want smaller curls. What I do is blowdry curling mousse into my hair and then when I'm curling with the iron I run it through in small half inch sections first straightening (my hair already has curl) and then the second time I roll and hold for 10-15 seconds depending on the heat.

Take about an inch of your hair, put it round the curling iron, leave it for about 5-10 seconds. Do it for the rest of your hair.
