LAX in Los Angeles takes about 3 hours. That seems to be the universal amount of time. Depending on the flights, sometimes longer, but not by much. Middle of the week flights are shorter because of fewer travelers, but ID's and luggage and people are still searched.

My parents were in the security line at Newark Airport for about 4 hours yesterday. If their flight had waited for them, the total time would have been about 5 hours.

all airlines now recommend that you come 2.5-3 hours before your flight leaves. i think it should actually be 24 hours before it leaves. just sleep in the terminal i guess....
