The whole thing is mostly an urban legend.

Look up "Recycling" in your yellow pages directory. There are scrap dealers that will buy aluminum by the pound. The price varies based on the amount that you bring at one time. For instance if you bring a milk jug full of can tabs, you are probably likely to get about $6 to $7 for it. But if you were to bring 10 of them to the recycler you are likely to get about $12 per jug. To get exact pricing its best to call them and ask them what will buy them for.

Just as a side note- it is interesting how people in the recycling industry make money on both ends. When we separate our trash, the local govt pays the recycling company to pick up it up and haul it all away. The recycling company then sells the stuff to a scrap dealer by the ton.

I'm not sure that is accurate Alum. in my area is going for .50-.75 per pound. It would take more than a milk jug to come up with that kind of poundage. You can collect alum soda cans and take them to a local scrap recycleing place. Look in the phone book to find one call them and see what the rate is. It changes frequently so what it is today may not be the going rate a week from now.

Aluminum isn't worth that per pound as scrap. The top tabs are redeemed by the soft drink manufacturers on a charity basis only. Local charities collect them towards medical equipment for the disabled mostly.

Sounds like you got some time on your hands. You should collect the whole can and get the money for them at a local redemption center. I see people on skid row doing this all the time. They seem to be making enough money to be purchasing nice cardboard homes in some choice neighborhoods.

They are worth the same amount as the rest of the can. The reason people collect them instead of cans is that they take up less space and weigh the most.

Yes you can get money for your tabs. Its a great idea too! I'm not sure where you would take them, but call your city and ask them. Maybe the utilities department will be able to tell you since they take care of the recycling.

aluminum is worth like... couple bucks a ton? so its worth nothing, you couldnt pay someone to take it.

companies that bottle take them and give a higher worth and buy things for medical charities...
