i have a small carpeting scratching post for my kitten, i was told those made in rope or angled cardboard are better, i want something nice for him to play with but thats not going to cost me $50, or take up an entire room, i live in a relatively small apartment...any ideas??

There is no guarantee that your cat will use it, better to buy covers for your expensive furniture, because it would certainly prefer that to what you get it.

We have two carpeted ones, the carpet eventualy shreds but they have been good scratching posts, the cardboard ones don't really last and many cats don't like them since they aren't stable (they move if the cat pushes up against it) I would say stick with what you have and then maybe in a year or whatever get a new one, those things are always expensive.

Check out ebay. I have purchased a couple small scratching posts and a condo there. Make sure you watch the shipping price. Some times you think you are getting a good deal when you are not. Also.....keep an eye on Costco. They get some random pet stuff there. I have picked up some stuff there.

Petco sells the inexpensive rope kind that lays flat on the floor. But some cats like the stand up kind which are much more expensive. Maybe you can try getting a used one from craigslist.com or try neighborhood garage sales.
