Hello, I have a 96 Jetta and last night while I was about 40 miles from home it crapped out on me. I was going up a slight hill (in 4th gear) and it started sort of jerking forward and back on me, I thought mabye I was going too slow for 4th gear so I put it in 3rd, and it did the same thing. I had to pull over. I tried many times to start it, every time it idled very rough before it eventually died... What could be causing this? I tried starting it while my friends looked under the hood and they said they saw a spark, any ideas? Is this going to be very expensive to fix?? Thanks for your help.

There are several possiblities ranging from cheap to expensive...

1) Fuel Filter - you could have bad gas or dirt in the gas and it has clogged up the filter. This will slow the car and eventually stop it from running. Fuel filters are generally inexpensive and not to difficult to replace.
2) Electronics - the computer that controls the engine may have found a fault in one of the electronic components or sensors. This could cause the problem you describe but you should have seen a 'check engine' light prior to the car dying on you. This is a bit more costly to fix and could become expensive.
3) Timing Belt - This is the belt that keeps the valves in time with movement of the pistons. These belts generally go between 80 to 110k miles. This could also cause the problem you described. Depending on type of engine a broken timing belt could cause major internal engine damage. This could cost anywhere from $200 to more than a thousand.

You'll need to get a mechanic to look at it to determine what happened for sure.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

PS: I'd check the fuel filter first if it was me!

I would start with the fuel filter and if that didn't do it then I would go witha fuel pump, the filter at advance is 43.00 and the fuel pump is 436.00 so you want to start with the fuel filter first.

Take the plates off and put them on a American car like maybe a Ford.

In tank fuel pump. It sounds like your not getting enough fuel from the pump.
