If you want to do a family getaway to the west coast of Michigan, there are a lot more appealing areas like Saugatuck, Holland, Muskegon, or even St. Joseph. Benton Harbor has been referred to as "Benton Harlem" over the years, and the unfortunate thing is that they really have earned that nickname (Remember the riots a couple of years ago because an African American ex-con on a motorcycle ran from the cops and was killed in an accident, and the rioters said it was racially motivated? Heck, the cops who were chasing him couldn't tell what color his skin was). You can do better. Holland has the tulip farms, Muskegon has a water park (and I think there's an amusement park out that way too), Saugatuck has the downtown area with the marina smack dab in the middle of it...take your pick.

I used to live a few miles from Benton Harbor and it was a broken down ghost town. Don't waste your time there! Cross the bridge into St. Joseph and you'll move way up the chart! Or follow the Blue Star Highway north along Lake Michigan and find some nice towns up that way.
