I love having two girlfriends! But I prefer *polyamory* to polygamy. The emphasis should be on adults loving each other, not on the sex, and certainly not below the age of consent.

I knew a polygamist online once. If it were all the way he and his two wives practiced it I'd have no problem with it. It would take adjusting all sorts of laws since our system of inheriting, paying child support, etc. are all based on one spouse. But if that were the only objection we could re-write the laws.
The problem is that it's almost never the result of several people making an equal, informed, loving decision to share their lives together. Polygamy is almost always tied to messed up social groups where older men control the community and determine who marries who and younger men are excluded and even run out of the community. It's too often tied to things like a dominant, main wife and subservient younger wives. It raises questions about whether the man is marrying for love or to amass an impressive collection of servants. Needless to say, if we had polygamy we'd have to have polyandry as well where one woman has more than one husband. Otherwise the numbers don't work out well. And, physically speaking, one woman can far more easily satisfy multiple guys.
In theory I have nothing against it if it were really what people chose freely. In practice it's too often part of a very restrictive social group that oppresses women. And the psychological problems from threesomes or more are almost always worse than the benefits.

Polygamy, all by itself is no big deal to me. If you want to marry three people, that's your business. It's the things that typically come with those people that practice polygamy (the cults in Utah and Nevada) such as child marriage, molestation, and abuse along with incest and the like. Those things, I have a problem with.
I personally would never marry a man that was already married or take on two husbands. But if all parties are in agreement, I seriously have no problem with it. It's much better than those men and women that go around having sex with multiple partners behind their spouse's back that are causing the pain. Not the people that want to marry more than one person.

I am LDS (No, we do not practive polygamy) and I am against it. However I do understand that in the past with my religion, a small percent used to practice this because many men died in battles leaving women and children with no one to care for them. Men stepped in and took these familes in to take care of and provide for them. I guess I don't have a problem with that. I do have a problem with the group run by Warren Jeffs (they are not LDS, but a group that broke off from the church a long time ago when the church came out and said it was a sin) because they marry 13 year old girls to 40 year olds. They run young men off so that there wont be any competetion. I think that's so sick, and the men should all be in jail.

I think any relationship between consenting adults is fine. However, few religions now recognize this as a valid relationship. The bible's Old Testament contains numerous examples of polygamy, and the Islamic faith allows polygamy with limits. The Mormon church used to believe in it, but had to renounce the practice so that Utah could join the United States.

I am personally against polygamy, but it should be allowed in certain circumstances. I shall elaborate.
1. There is a war and most of the men have died.
2. Those widows have no one to care for them, and the state obviously won't care for them.
3. To support orphans.

Polygamy basically turns the woman into a sexual object worthy of little respect. If a man can juggle more than one woman, who is that woman to him?
Polygamy sickens and outrages me. It's only acceptable in extreme circumstances.

And to the Muslim, yes, polygamy is allowed, but only under the circumstances I have mentioned. They are not allowed if the man is unhappy with his wife, she cannot have children, etc. Those very reasons take the humanity away from a woman and turn her into meat.

Therefore, polygamy should only be allowed if there are no other options, or those options are too horrible to take.

If you can afford it then go for it. Personally, having one woman is hard enough, having two might drive me over the edge. FYI, Christianity doesn't forbid polygamy, it doesn't really say you must marry one woman or one man anywhere in the bible, the design was one man to one woman but we know lot of the charachters in bible had multiple wives. Which was not a sin at the time.

well, I live in Utah,,religion based polygamy is harsh male driven relationship, as a woman you have no rights, no opinion, you just raise children and share the burden with your sister wives.

So, if you like that sort of thing,, go for it.

Now polygamy as an alternate lifestyle,, if everybody is consensual no victim, no harm, no foul.
Might even be fun.

P.S. Mormons are not polygamists it usually occurs in offshoots of the LDS faith.

At different times God allowed polygamy, Abraham, Issac, Israel, David, and Solomon were all permitted to practice it. In the last days, God permitted it again for a short space, unfortunately someone told us Latter-Day Saints that we can't have freedom of religion.

Isaiah 4:1, "And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, we will eat of our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach."

Why will this happen can be found in a later verse, Isaiah 13:12, "I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of ophir."

Food for Thought. Polygamy will be permitted again in the future.

Have you watched that show on HBO called Big Love? I think it is ok the way Bill has 3 wifes b/c it is like 1 big happy family, but the compound is totally different on the show, it is 14 yr olds marrying 60 yr old men, and that isn't right at all. Atleast Bills wives are his age, well Marjene (sp) is younger, but not that younger LOL. It is a really good show in my opinion though.
